Some people get confused about the difference between hemp and marijuana. Are they two distinct plants? Actually, there is no distinction. Marijuana is just the common name for several varieties of marijuana plants. Hemp, (Cannabis sativa ssp. sativa), is a subspecies of cannabis.

Hemp contains more cannabidiol (CBD) while other types of marijuana have more tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD has to do with many of the medical benefits of marijuana whereas THC is what causes that weed high. If you are vaping cannabis for the medical benefits, then you should vape hemp. If you are vaping cannabis for the high, then choose another variety that has more THC.

Physical Differences Between Hemp and Marijuana

Using the visual test, hemp has more slender leaves which are compound with a palmate shape. The flowers are small with a greenish-yellow color. It is also stout and has an aromatic scent. Hemp is also popular for being cultivated for its fiber which can be used for making string, yarn, rope, cable, artificial sponges and canvas.

In addition, its edible seeds are a good source of fiber, protein and magnesium. Shelled hemp seeds are also known as a health food that can be eaten raw or used in salads. Hemp seeds can also be added to your fruit smoothies.

On the other hand, marijuana is commonly associated with being addictive and makes a person high due to its high THC content. Marijuana plants can grow up to 4 feet tall whereas hemp usually grows up to 2 feet tall.

Are They Legal?

Cannabis used to be illegal in most parts of the world but as its numerous medical benefits come to light, legalization is gaining ground. CBD is now known as an effective agent for pain management and many other illnesses. Whether they are legal or not depends on your location, check with your local authorities.

CBD oil has shown to be a great way to treat mental health issues. In fact, one study in 2019 found that CBD is also effective in reducing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)-related symptoms like insomnia, anxiety for children, and having nightmares for adults.

If you want to use cannabis for its medical benefits, go with hemp. If you are using it for recreation, go with the other varieties.
